KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Malayu Berhad is looking at ways to fine male passengers who use its "pink coaches" reserved for women.

KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said since their launch in April, there had been an average of three encroachments a week, including cases of women being harassed.

He said there were probably other cases which went unreported, possibly due to the embarrassing nature of the incidents.

Aminuddin said there was an urgent need for regulations to enforce the practice.

"There are some men who purposely board the coaches, despite clear signs that they are only meant for women.

"We are currently drafting a proposal for the government which will cover aspects such as enforcement and structure of the fines."

Launched on April 28, the introduction of the pink coaches was to give women commuters a safe and convenient service.

Such women-only coaches are also available in Japan and some European countries.

Currently, big white posters with pink writing decorate the pink coaches at train stations and there are signs clearly indicating where to queue for them.

Announcements are also made regularly over the public address system to advise women to board these special coaches.

At present, women with children under 12 are allowed into these pink coaches. Exceptions are made for handicapped and elderly men.

Aminuddin said KTMB would get the help of auxiliary policemen once the women-only rule is strictly enforced.

He hoped that other commuter operators would also introduce women-only coaches and cooperate in monitoring encroachments.

"Male passengers should respect the privacy of the women.

"By imposing fines, we hope to deter such incidents."
