MACC seeks help of NGOs and groups in graft war

2011/05/28

Share |

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 442 people have been arrested since April last year until March this year for bribing enforcement officers, with the highest bribe offered at RM1 million.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Community Education Division director Datuk Samsiah Abu Bakar said 422 of those arrested were men and 282 were locals.

"The arrest shows that the MACC is firm and we hope the public are also firm in rejecting bribes, not matter how small the amount involved."

She said this during a forum entitled "Towards Zero Corruption: Role of Non-governmental Organisations in Fighting Corruption" here yesterday.

Meanwhile, MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Sutinah Sutan said associations and NGOs should be active in helping MACC to fight corruption.

This, Sutinah added, was because the NGOs interacted a lot with the public and they could help explain the dangers of corruption.

"The NGOs can be the eyes and ears or watch dog to report any malpractices, misappropriations, corruption and power abuse," she said after the forum.

She said the eradication of corruption was the responsibility of everybody and not that of the enforcement authorities or MACC alone. -- Bernama

On the lookout for youths with passion for planet

EcoKnights president and founder Yasmin Rasyid says the Anugerah Hijau competition aims to encourage young people to learn about the challenges facing our planet.
EcoKnights president and founder Yasmin Rasyid says the Anugerah Hijau competition aims to encourage young people to learn about the challenges facing our planet.
THE country is on the lookout for 20 young Malaysians for the 3rd Anugerah Hijau competition -- a rewarding and inspiring initiative to get youths to be creatively involved in the conservation of the planet.

As the world becomes increasingly concerned with the environmental impact of our actions, youths today want to know where they fit in.

Anugerah Hijau -- a competition among youths between the ages of 14 and 25 -- may just be the right platform for young adults to advance environmental protection through creative outlets.

The project is the brainchild of EcoKnights (www.ecoknights.org.my), a non-profit environmental organisation based in Kuala Lumpur.

For this year's competition, young adults are invited to explore the environment through short videos/films and sustainable fashion wear.

"The competition aims to encourage youths to learn about the challenges facing our planet today, find possible solutions to protect the environment and, above all, act to change things for the better for our planet," said Yasmin Rasyid, president and founder of EcoKnights.

Yasmin said the finalists would be announced by the middle of next month, after which they were required to attend a workshop to hone their skills.

For the film-making workshop, documentary film-maker Lara Ariffin and her colleagues from Novista Sdn Bhd will be moulding the best 10 proposals submitted by the participants.

They will share their knowledge on film-making to generate 10 impactful short videos.

The shortlisted videos will be uploaded on the Anugerah Hijau website, www.anugerahhijau.my, for the public to vote.

For the fashion-making workshop, Malaysian International Fashion Alliance 2010's Most Promising Designer of the Year, Silas Liew, will share some tips with the finalists on their proposed designs.

All fashion wear must be made from at least 70 per cent recycled or reused materials. The designs must be practical and the materials must be easily available.

All the fashion wear will be paraded by professional models in October where the designs will be judged by a panel of experts from the fashion and environmental industries.

The idea for the workshops is to encourage the finalists to see, hear and learn from professionals and experts.

Anugerah Hijau is working towards the empowerment of young people to think outside the box and to engage them in green issues on a variety of platforms.

When asked what each participant would need to have to be part of Anugerah Hijau, Yasmin said: "Genuine passion to help in making the environment better and dedication in whatever they do.

"The youth of Malaysia are the future. If we don't act now, the things that we love most in nature -- fresh air, clear skies and the beach, for instance -- might be lost forever. So, let us try to channel our energy for the future generations to enjoy."

To learn how you can be part of this challenge, log on to www.anugerahhijau.my.

This year's supporters and partners of Anugerah Hijau are the CIMB Foundation, Shell Sustainable Development Grants, Malaysian Productivity Corporation, biohome (Lam Soon Products), Yuber and Spin.

The Anugerah Hijau crew together with EcoKnights will be at the Green Heroes Unite campaign at Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya from Wednesday to June 12.

The campaign aims to highlight amazing green efforts by Malaysians.

Visit the EcoKnights booth to learn more about Anugerah Hijau and how you can be a green hero, too.

Pelancaran Kad Keahlian RIR disempurnakan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

YouTube spells success

Yuna is based in New York.
INSTEAD of becoming an overnight sensation, like those on reality television programmes, wannabe singers and artistes who post their videos on YouTube know that it can be a long, hard road.

But many are prepared to wait, with some having to do so for almost two years, before fame came knocking on their door.

But they are not complaining because when you are on YouTube, you can become famous worldwide.

Take, for example, singers Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black and also Cody Clack, who are huge success stories, thanks to YouTube.

Malaysia, too, has its success stories in artistes Zee Avi, Ana Raffali, Yunalis Zarai (or Yuna) and newcomer Nur Imelda Ahmad (or Melda).

For Melda, 20, who is pursuing a music and vocal course at Universiti Teknologi Mara, she had to wait 18 months to be known for her video clip.

"Luckily for me, I was patient and my videoclip, Putus by Alan Marzhas, was well received on YouTube.

"If you are looking to do well in this medium, be patient for success will usually come much later than sooner."

Besides Putus, Melda has also released Kimia.

She collaborated with composer Ajai on Aku Adalah Aku.

So how many hits does one need to become popular on YouTube?

Some 100,000 hits should be sufficient, said Melda.

However, Zee Avi, Ana and Yuna have millions of hits for their videos.

Melda said: "I am still new but they are all well established. I spoke to Yuna some years ago and she encouraged me.

"YouTube is a good medium if you want to break into the entertainment scene because if you are well received and have a large following, recording companies will sign you up," said Melda, who wants to become a vocal coach.

She said some of the biggest names on YouTube were Justine Bieber and acoustic singer and songwriter Marie Digby.

Songwriter Ana Raffali has been posting her videos on YouTube since 2006 and she received her big break in 2007 when composer Adit Alfian saw her work and contacted her.

"I have been posting my own songs for sometime, including Hujan Bunga Di Kuala Lumpur.

"When people contacted me about my videos, it turned out to be a pleasant turn of events because when I started out, there were few Malaysians on YouTube.

'Though I am one of the earlier ones to have posted my videos on YouTube, I am not the first. It amazes me to see that more women are going on YouTube to showcase their work and this is very encouraging," says Ana.

Ana, 25, consolidated her position in the music industry when her composition, Tolong Ingatkan Aku won the Juara Lagu annual music competition in January.

Her other songs, including Kalau Berpacaran, which she collaborated with singers Sohaimi Meor Hassan and Altimet, have also done well on the music charts and have received a lot of airplay on radio stations.

"YouTube is a good medium to showcase your videos, but it might not be the best.

"It definitely is a place to get started in your singing career and share you videos with the world.

"If you are good, your popularity will grow by leaps and bounds."

Singer and songwriter Yuna has her fans to thank for becoming a household name on YouTube.

"My fans are the ones who did me a big favour by posting my video on YouTube.

"But never once did I think or assume that I would become a household name like Zee Avi or Ana Raffali.

"Even on MySpace, I never revealed who I was to fans. Those who knew my songs knew that I was also performing at many gigs and non-black-tie events," says Yuna, who is based in New York.

Yuna, 24, is in the midst of a recording contracting with the Fader Label in the Big Apple.

In March, she released Decorate, which has five tracks.

She will release a full album at the end of this year.

"I signed with the Fader Label in New York because I want to break into the international market.

"YouTube has given me an international recognition and will open doors for those who want to make it big locally and overseas."

Yuna said that while YouTube was a good medium for international exposure, it was local gigs that allowed her to keep in touch with her Malaysian fans.

"They know my songs and my work. Some have followed me from one gig to another and this connects us on a personal level.

"We must be good on YouTube and performing in local gigs. You must have a following in both areas."

Inspiring youth to shoot great green videos
2011/05/14

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

This famous Chinese proverb is true even today.

The Anugerah Hijau competition shares the same philosophy as the proverb. Using videos instead, the competition aims to teach the youths today to film and document an inspiring environmental message and/or story to help educate more Malaysians on the urgency to start taking actions today -- for a better tomorrow.

One of the categories for this year's Anugerah Hijau competition (Totally Active -- Capturing the Green) involves coming up with green stories in the form of a short video. Having documentary producer Lara Ariffin as its mentor, this category is all about engaging youth's creativity in telling inspiring stories about the environment, their efforts and their understanding of conservation.

"Education represents a powerful tool in environmental protection, improving livelihoods, and expanding environmental solutions available to young people in developing countries.

"My hope is that through this competition, youths are able to tell their green stories to the world and inspire youths to take action.

"I am absolutely delighted to be part of Anugerah Hijau," Lara said.

"I am excited to learn and see how this year's submissions will be and hope to see some amazing young talents out there who may potentially have the new winning green video. This competition is essentially to mould two kinds of talents -- one is in film making, and the other in environmental protection.

"I enjoy making nature-related films as there is so much right here in our own backyards. I also believe that one should make films or videos that show some hope, or at least show solutions as to what can be done today to improve the environment. I believe people need to be encouraged.

What's the point in portraying the whole pessimistic process of doom and gloom?"

The competition is easy. Send a brief proposal to the Anugerah Hijau internet portal and provide information on what your green story is about.

If your story is selected by the panel of judges, then you are on your way to attending a customised video-making workshop, hosted by EcoKnights and conducted by Lara and her team at Novista Sdn Bhd.

The video-making workshop will be held during the first week of July at the Sepang International Circuit, in conjunction with the Shell Eco Marathon Race.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, this workshop will introduce the finalists to the basics of film-making.

There will be a session dedicated specially to producing the finalists' film and the technical elements of filming and editing.

Lara herself is no stranger to the world of documentary film making. Among some of her more famous works are Among the Great Apes with Michelle Yeoh, The Highland Towers Disaster and Temengor. Together with her husband, documentary producer Harun Rahman, and her amazing and talented team from Novista Sdn Bhd, 10 finalists with the best green stories will be selected and will be enrolled in the workshop prior to the start of their video-making process.

"We hope that with their green videos, we will be able to use social media and networking to give a powerful voice to some of the unheard green stories.

"Anugerah Hijau has given me a choice to focus my efforts on young adults because it will take civic engagement and massive action to create life-saving solutions," Lara said. "I believe in the kinetic energy of youth to inspire major shifts in culture and the environment."

The competition ends on May 31. All you have to do is send the secretariat your green story to the official website, www.anugerahhijau.my.

Ten best stories or submissions will be selected and these stories will then be made into short videos.

There is no limit to the number of submissions an individual or group can make to this competition.

All finalists are required to bring their own video cameras and tripods to the workshop.

Anugerah Hijau is a non-profit corporate social responsibility effort in partnership with CIMB Foundation and the Shell Sustainable Development Grants, the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC), Yuber Active, biohome and EcoKnights.

In its third year, it aims to inspire and elevate the voices of youth today to empower more young people to take charge of their environment.
