Anugerah Hijau programme manager Fadly Bakhtiar said the reason the competition focuses on fashion and films/videos is because film and fashion are two of the most expressive ways commonly used by youths to make a statement.KUALA LUMPUR: The Anugerah Hijau competition hopes to spur youths to think -- what can "I" do to help the environment?
The national green competition, to help identify green ideas by youths aged between 14 and 25 years, that would be used for the development of environment-themed short videos and fashion designs, is aimed at pushing the creativity and mindsets of youths to include broader issues, such as the environment.

To be eligible, all ideas must be submitted to the Anugerah Hijau secretariat via its official web portal, www.anugerahhijau.my.

To participate, a one- or two-page proposal (.doc or .docx format) detailing the proposed short video (e.g., storyline, synopsis, etc) and proposed earth-friendly fashion design (e.g., a sketched design, types of recycled materials used for the design, etc) must be submitted to Anugerah Hijau via the official website, together with the participation form.

This paperless format of submission is to help minimise the competition's carbon footprint on the environment.

The submission phase has already begun and will end on May 31, after which a panel of judges will announce the top 10 finalists for each category on June 5, in conjunction with global World Environment Day celebrations.

The best 10 ideas for a short film/video and fashion design will be selected by the panel of judges, where the finalists are required to attend a workshop to build skills prior to the completion of their short film/video and/or fashion design.

There will be one grand cash prize of RM3,000 for each category and two runner-up prizes of RM1,500 each. Prizes will be awarded directly to the secondary schools and colleges/universities. Apart from monetary rewards, each winner will also receive special prizes from CIMB Foundation in the form of a CIMB Junior Bank Account, green hampers from the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC), Shell, an environmental leadership training programme from Yuber and green products from BioHome.

"The reason the competition focuses on fashion and films/videos is because film and fashion are two of the most expressive ways commonly used by youths to make a statement," said Fadly Bakhtiar, Anugerah Hijau's programme manager.

"Not many people realise the impact of the fashion industry on the environment. From sourcing for raw materials to production, and for a completed attire to reach the shopping malls, it may have travelled thousands of miles. In short, fashion actually uses a lot of energy and resources and if we are to work towards a self-sustaining society, we have to seriously think of what we will be wearing in the future.

"Videos or films, on the other hand, could potentially open up the eyes of Malaysians to what is happening around them locally and globally, especially if it relates to the environment.

"We are looking for inspiring, and impactful short films, those that can instil the urgency to tackle one aspect of an environmental issue and at the same time, entertain, educate and inform the masses. Ignorance is a silent killer, and we hope to break this silence with these videos and films," added Fadly.

The challenge may sound like a tall order, taking green issues beyond just planting trees or recycling. But think about it -- tackling environmental issues is not all doom and gloom; it can be elevated to the next level if we know how to find ways to make some difference today.
