PUTRAJAYA: The travel time for bus commuters from Bukit Beruntung and its surrounding areas to the Kuala Lumpur city centre has been reduced by 70 minutes since the beginning of this month.

This follows the newly-opened Bus Expressway Transit 6 (BET 6) which travels from Bukit Sentosa Satu to Central Market (Pasar Seni) using the North-South Expressway, thus shortening the journey time from two-and-a-half hours to about an hour and 20 minutes.

Six buses are servicing the route daily -- three in the morning and three in the evening. The one-way bus fare is RM4.


BET 6 is the latest addition to the BET system under the Urban Public Transport National Key Results Area (NKRA) as part of the Government Transformation Programme to improve urban public transport by having buses link heavily populated areas and the city centre via highways.

The route begins at Bukit Sentosa Satu Terminal and passes through the Bukit Beruntung toll, North-South Expressway, Jalan Duta toll, Selangor Club and Masjid Jamek LRT station before arriving at Central Market.

On the return leg, the bus uses the same route except for stopping at Jalan Parlimen instead of the Selangor Club.


"With BET 6, commuters are expected to experience more reliable service and a smoother ride as the new route reduces journey time and provides easy connectivity," said the Transport Ministry's lead NKRA coordinator Ruhaizah Mohamed Rashid.

BET 6 is operated by Setara Jaya Sdn Bhd (SJ Bus), which also operates BET 5 that runs from Bandar Tasik Puteri via Rawang Country Homes, Rawang toll, North-South Expressway, Jalan Duta toll, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Pertama Complex/Sogo and Central Market.

Since the BET 5 launch last October, the service has seen a two-fold increase in ridership within the first five months of operation.


A similar improvement in ridership is expected to be seen for BET 6.

Apart from the significant improvement seen in BET 5, the ministry also recorded tremendous achievements in BET 1, BET 2, BET 3 and BET 4, which were launched in January last year.

Ridership for the four BET routes posted a 78 per cent increase since their launch, from 2,700 passengers daily last year to 4,650 passengers so far this year.

The BET service's total ridership is expected to contribute a sizeable percentage towards achieving the 25 per cent public transport modal share target by 2012 in the Klang Valley.
